Proposed Course - $OPEN OFFICE

Every DAY, 200,000 people worldwide install Open Office  -- the free, high quality alternative to Microsoft Office for writing on computers.

Big Blue and Cousins will teach you to become a better trained user of Open Office if you sign up for
the Saturday morning Open Office course, starting 27 Feb. 2010, 9:30am.  Cost for the four session course is $60 for members and $70 for non members. The proposed days are  27 Feb, 13 Mar, 27 Mar, and 10 Apr. You can sign up by emailing me at <training@bbc.org>, or by putting your name and email address on the signup sheet near the back of the sign-in book on the M.I.C. desk.  Seats are allocated on a first paid basis.

Long time member and instructor George Bowden will teach the course of 4 sessions, on WRITER the word processing program, and on CALC the spreadsheet program. This course is aimed at the beginning computer user who already types a few emails per week.  This is part of our Less Expensive Software (L.E.S.) approach. One of the major club costs is keeping our software current, so free is a good cost. Also many world businesses and governments are moving to Open Office to minimize costs.

Since this is a fairly short time to the start of the first session on 27 Feb 2010, I ask your early response. Also George Bowden would like to limit this course to  9 Attendees.

Before Upgrading to Win 7 & More
Tips

If you are planning to upgrade to Windows 7, especially if you are doing so from Windows XP, here's an article well worth reading in preparation.......

blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2009/10/windows-7-read-before-upgrading.html

And Dick has written another worthwhile article on the economy of purchasing a new computer with Win 7 rather than buying a 'full-price' version of Win 7. He also notes some of the problems he encountered. There's a link at the bottom of this page or just click on this.....

Info on CRTC Hearings on Open & Accessible Internet in Canada
Tips

Are you aware that there have been hearings before the CRTC to decide on how open and highspeed our access to the Internet should be? Here is an interesting point that came out in the presentations as well as an URL where you can get more info and have your say as well.

WE HAVE MORE WORK TO DO!

Although our presentation went well, the Big Telecoms remained forceful and indignant. What's worse is that the ISPs' presentations revealed that several of them are throttling and employing a variety of traffic management tools. As Michael Geist noted, "There are those that throttle all the time (Cogeco), during large chunks of the day (Bell), only during congested periods (Shaw), or not at all (Telus, Videotron).

Now more than ever, it's important that the CRTC know where the public stands on this issue. You helped deliver nearly 12,000 letters to the CRTC. Now help us get even more by telling your friends and family to do the same:

Definitely worth taking the time to read at the very least.

PhotoShoots: PHOTOS FROM THE PHOTO WALK 2009
PhotoShoots

To see the photos taken on the Victoria Photo Walk on Saturday, July 18, there are 2 locations. One has the entries into the Contest from each Walker (2 ea excluding the Leader), many of whom are BB&C members. You can also see the winner of the Victoria Worldwide Photo Walk (scroll down below the map). That one is located here:

worldwidephotowalk.com/victoria-bc-ca/

The second site is where we're posting our 20 favourite photos and believe me there are some wonderful photos on this site too. Of course, the top ones, in the opinion of the photographer, are in the link above. Enjoy these great photos of our city:
