President's Choice Volunteer of the Month:April 2000
by Clive Amos
his month I have chosen a volunteer who has been a member of BB&C for more than half his life. If I remember correctly, Matthew Skala joined our club when he was 10 years old. He is now much, much older; I sincerely hope this is not just due to his association with Big Blue and Cousins. Matthew often participated in the discussions in our online conferences by sharing his knowledge of computers as he acquired it. Matthew is an excellent example of our motto of "Users Helping Users".
He ran a Pascal SIG from 1992 through 1996 and co-chaired the Programming SIG 1997-1990. He has also contributed a respectable number of articles to our Newsletter. They range from the technical to the philosophical aspects of computing and club membership. I particularly enjoyed one on Fellowship, which describes very well, among other things, one of the reasons why it is valuable to belong to a club, a computer club in particular. If you are interested, this article can be viewed here .
Last year Matthew took over the reins of our Systems Department and has been instrumental in helping BB&C move toward the implementation of a standard Internet based communication system — one that uses the applications that all members have freely available, no matter what type of computer system they may have.
Given on behalf of the members of Big Blue and Cousins and myself, this award symbolizes our appreciation for the time and effort you have given us to make our club better. Well-done Matthew.
Thank you,
