Getting Started with Wildcat! Navigator
A Guide for Windows 95 Users
| WC index |
This guide assumes that you have downloaded the Wildcat program file WCNAV95I.EXE file from the BBS or have created the file on your hard drive from the Wildcat! diskette set available from the clubhouse.

Starting the Installation

Click on the Windows 95 Start button and choose Run. Type in C:\WCNAV95I or, if your file is located elsewhere, then type in that location (or click on the Browse button to indicate where the file is to be stored). Click on the OK button.

The WCNAV95I.EXE file contains files that have been compressed. The first step is to extract the files needed to continue. Click on the Yes button.

Once the files have been extracted you will see this screen and the InstallShield Wizard will start to guide you through the installation process for Wildcat! Navigator.

Tip: If you have any other Windows applications running we suggest you shut them down before continuing with the setup of Wildcat!

Click on the Next> button to continue.

By default the program will install itself on your C: hard drive in a directory called WCNAV. Click on the Next> button to accept this choice.

If you would prefer to install the program on another hard drive (or in another directory) then click on the Browse button and indicate where to install Wildcat!

Choose Yes to have the program create the directory on your hard drive. (If you have previously installed Wildcat! then this message box may not appear.)

Click on the Next> button to accept a new program folder for the Wildcat! program icons. We recommend this unless you have your own system for organizing folders in Windows 95.

This completes the decisions about where to store the Wildcat! files and what program folder to use.

Copying files to your chosen location

Click on the Next> button to continue the installation. The installation program will then copy the files to the chosen directory and create the program folder.

We recommend that you review the Read Me file at the end of the program installation. But, if you're in a hurry, de-select the "Yes, I want to read the Read Me file" and then click on the Finish button to continue getting on-line. This program group appears once the installation has completed.

Starting Wildcat!

Double-click the Wildcat! Navigator icon to start the program.

Note: Wildcat! Navigator also will show up on the programs listing that you can access from the Windows 95 Start button. Click on the Start button, select Programs and then look for the Wildcat! Navigator listing.

The first time you start up Wildcat!, you are asked to identify the Device to use with Wildcat! (normally this will be your modem), and to identify where your Web browser is located on your system.

(continued)

If you know what communications port (COM 1, 2, 3, or 4) your modem is using, then select it now. If you are not sure what communications port is being used then proceed to the next step.

Normally Wildcat! can locate your browser automatically. If it cannot, then click on the Browse button and indicate where the Netscape or Internet Explorer program is on your computer.

To identify what communications port your modem is connected to:

    Click on the Win 95 Start button;
    Choose Settings, and then Control Panel;
    Double-click the Modems icon;
    Click the Diagnostics tab;
    Note which Port the modem is attached to; and
    Click on the OK button to close.

Return to Wildcat's Welcome dialogue box (the one in the step above) and select the correct communications port in the Device to use selection box. Then click on the OK button to proceed to the next step.

You now should see the Wildcat! Connection Manager window. There are two entries already there. We are going to add an entry for the Big Blue and Cousin's bulletin board system.

Adding an Entry for BB&C

    Click on Connections in the menu bar.
    Choose New... from the drop-down menu.
    Enter the following information for each area:
      System: Big Blue and Cousins
      Area code: (leave blank unless long distance)
      Phone/Host: 382-7470
      User ID: (Your First and Last name)
      Password: (Your BBS password.)
      Device: (leave as is, but check it is Modem COMx)
Click on the OK button when you've entered the information.

The New Connection dialogue box should look similar to this (except with your name, password and appropriate settings for your modem).

Connecting to the BB&C Wildcat! BBS

Highlight the Big Blue and Cousins entry and click on Dial in the menu bar. Wildcat! will dial the Big Blue and Cousins bulletin board system and connect.

Please attend the "How to BBS" SIG to learn more about getting the most out of our club's Bulletin Board System.
