Program Review

Roboform

by Ron Kehn

R oboform is a little utility that remembers passwords and data needed to fill in forms on websites you use regularly.

The Roboform features page will tell you about it and a link on the left will allow you to download a limited version that will permit you to save up to ten items. The advantage of Roboform is that it permits you to use longer more complicated passwords and remembers them for you. The program will even generate a password for a site if asked. Not only does it do passwords but it fills in multiple form items. Its ideal for sites that want you to fill in you name, address and all that everytime you go there.

You can fill in the data and then click Save.

The program attaches it self to your browser as a toolbar and it works well with Firefox (and I advise everyone to be run Firefox) and Internet Explorer.

You can use a book mark (or favourite in IE) to go to a website and if Roboform has it in its database it displays the site name next to the tab for Logins or you can click on Logins and it will open to a list of sites and you can use that as a link.

The list is protected by a master password and you must remember this as you will be prompted for it the first time Roboform tries to access its data during a browser session.

Roboform has a suggested retail price of $29.95 US for one computer and $9.95 US for an additional machine. It is from Siber Systems and like the companion program Good Sync they offer a discount price for multiple units—$17.95 for anything past five units.

A version of Roboform is available for use with USB flash drives at $39.95—my Sandisk USB came for a limited version Pass2Go version that allows 10 items and I find that is sufficient when I am traveling
