January 4, 2006 Meeting

We will briefly review or clarify where necessary the questions and comments in Questions and Comments. We will then look at PHP coding and perhaps install a MySQL database on the HSP server (www.bbc.org) that each member will be able to access from home or on a clubhouse computer with PHP and MySQL. Note: Members who do not have a basic understanding of HTML will be encouraged to observe rather than participate pending development of a basic HTML SIG or course.

Possible PHP editor PHP Designer 2006 that might be adopted by the SIG.

December 8, 2005 Meeting

Basic HTML We will work through the HTML guides at htmldog.com. We will attempt to complete as many guides as possible to ensure that each participant has a good understanding of the basics of HTML and CSS before we move on to more advanced topics. To this end, we will each produce and publish simple pages on the WAMP servers previously installed on each Lab computer. SIG members are encouraged to look at the guides before the meeting.

If time permits, we will take an introductory look at the BB&C standard template and its PHP and MySQL coding as an example of how web page production and maintenance can be automated.

New SIG members are welcome, but we will not be able to give them more than simple support. If there is sufficient interest, catch-up sessions will be scheduled. New members should install WAMP 5 (as detailed in the November 17 meeting below) on their home computers prior to the meeting.

December 1 Meeting—Cancelled

November 17 Meeting

At this meeting we will install WAMP 5 on Lab computers used by each member. (Installation Help.) This will allow SIG members to experiment with web pages and PHP/MySQL coding during this and future meetings. We will then develop a few basic HTML and PHP pages to help beginners understand basic HTML and PHP.

November 10, 2005 Meeting

This will be an preliminary session to:

  1. Learn how to install tools to assist in the production of web pages. The tools (applications) will be installed on clubhouse SIG computers and members will be encouraged to do the same at home. See Recommended Web Tools.
  2. Demonstrate templates suitable for simple web pages that could be used as-is or modified by members with more advanced HTML skills. See Representative Templates
  3. If time permits, we will set up a small demo personal web page on HighSpeed Plus. We will also canvass SIG members who wish to publish similar pages.
  4. Discuss the future direction of the SIG including its name.

Reference Material

Prior to each meeting, we will attempt to provide tutorials on the aspect of web design to be covered in the meeting. These tutorials will be available on our website for members unable to attend. The content of future meetings will be determined by member's interests. For those wishing to read up on web page design, the W3Schools syllabus is a good starting point.

Prerequisites

None. However, SIG members should have a basic knowledge of Windows or Linux. Ideally, members should be able to write simple HTML code to produce, at least, an HTML table and a simple form. (We will offer introductory HTML sessions if needed.)

SIG Leader

Les Benson

Purpose

The purpose of the SIG is to:
— Assist club members who wish to publish simple web pages without detailed HTML or Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) knowledge.
— Provide guidance and training to members who wish to learn how to use Apache/PHP/MySQL and more advanced techniques.
— Share web development knowledge and ideas with each other.

Members of the SIG wishing to setup small personal or public service web pages will be offered web space on our HighSpeedPlus server depending on availability. Help and advice will be offered in setting pages up.
